Vietnam's HCM City posts smaller FDI in first 5 months

Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City lured $647.3 million worth of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the first five months of this year, compared with $1.055 billion in the same period last year, the city's Statistical Office said Sunday.

From January to May, the city licensed 276 FDI projects with total registered capital of $481.2 million, and saw 48 operational FDI projects increase their capital by a total of $166.1 million.

Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City witnessed 23 projects totaling $28.3 million being dissolved or moving to other localities, or having their investment licenses revoked.

Over the first five months, nearly 13,300 Vietnamese enterprises with total registered capital of roughly 100,000 billion Vietnamese dong (more than $4.4 billion) were established in Ho Chi Minh City.

Vietnam attracted FDI of nearly $10.2 billion in the January-May period, up 136.4 percent, according to the country's General Statistics Office. Meanwhile, it saw total realized capital of foreign-invested projects increase by 17.2 percent to 5.8 billion U.S. dollars.
