
As per Foreign Investment Agency (FIA) under the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MOPI), as of April 2016, there were 1,809 valid projects from 24 countries in the European Union (EU) in Vietnam with a total registered investment of $23.16 billion, accounting for 8.7 percent of the total number of projects in the country and eight percent of the country’s total registered investment.
Of which, processing and manufacturing industry led with 619 projects having total investment of $8 billion, making up 34.2 percent of the number of projects and 34.7 percent of EU’s total investment in Vietnam.
With small number of projects but large-scale ones, the real estate sector ranked the second with 43 projects and a total investment of $3.85 billion, making up only 2.4 percent of the number of projects and 16.7 percent of the total investment. Producing and distributing electricity ranked the third with a total investment of $3.58 billion, representing 15.5 percent of the total investment.
EU investors have been present in 51/63 localities in the country, focusing mainly in major economic centres and localities having favourable infrastructure such as HCM City, Hanoi, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Quang Ninh, Dong Nai, etc. Of which, HCM City took the leading position in attracting projects in EU with 709 projects and $5.3 billion investment, accounting for 23.1 percent of EU’s total registered capital in Vietnam.
Hanoi ranked the second with 408 projects and $3.6 billion, or 15.6 percent of the total registered investment. Ba Ria – Vung Tau ranked the third with 37 projects and $2.8 billion investment, or 12.2 percent of total registered investment.
Out of 24 EU countries that have valid projects in Vietnam, the Netherlands, UK, France, Luxembourg and Germany, etc. are considered as the countries that have largest investment in Vietnam, comprising of 84.3 percent of EU’s total investment in the country.
