
During his official visit to Vietnam from May 5-7, 2016, Kuwaiti Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabad and Vietnamese leaders affirmed their determination to deepen the Vietnam – Kuwait relationship and step up the cooperation in various fields, especially in trade, oil and gas, investment, development aid, employment and education and training.
The two sides also exchanged views on the Middle East and East Sea issues as well as others. They shared the view that active solutions are needed to settle disputes and conflicts, ensuring peace and stability in the region. They also expressed support of the settlement of disputes by peaceful means in line with international law, respect for the UN principles, and avoidance of intervening in other countries’ internal issues.
On the occasion, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his Kuwaiti counterpart Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabad witnessed the signing of cooperation agreements on culture, arts and sports; a deal within the framework of the Nghi Son refinery and petrochemical complex; and another agreement between the Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Vietnam and Kuwait.
During the visit, Kuwaiti Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabad paid courtesy visits to Party General Secretary Nguyen PhuTrong and State President Tran Dai Quang, laid a wreath at the Martyr Monuments and visited the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum.
During the 2011-2013 period, two-way trade exceeded 700 million dollars. Vietnam mainly exports garments-textiles, seafood, wood and timber products, computers, electronics, fruit, vegetables, pepper, footwear and porcelain products to Kuwait while importing oil, fertilizer, plastic materials, fabric, chemicals and apparel from Kuwait.
Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) is partnering with Japan in the 9 billion dollars-worth Vietnam-based Nghi Son Oil Refinery and Petrochemical Complex Project, under which the Kuwaiti side will provide crude oil for the plant. The plant whose construction began in October 2013 is scheduled to be put into operation in late 2017.
