Hong Kong has emerged as a potential export market for Vietnamese products including handicrafts, food, and rattan furniture.

Bilateral trade between Vietnam and Hong Kong reached US$16.3 billion last year, a 16.7 percent increase on 2014, according to Tina Phan, director in charge of Indochina from the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC).

Vietnam shipped an estimated $6.5 billion worth of exports to its business partner, while Hong Kong earned $9.8 billion in export revenue from the Southeast Asian country.

According to statistics released by the trade council, Vietnam is the 9thlargest trading partner of Hong Kong.

“We suggest local companies focus not only on quality, but also on packaging to improve their competitiveness in the international market,” Phan said, explaining that a well-designed product can help increase its price ten-fold.

In 2015, HKTDC, the international marketing organization for Hong Kong-based traders, manufacturers, and service providers, held 30 exhibitions, which attracted 35,000 exhibitors and more than 726,000 visitors.

The number of Vietnamese businessmen, including exhibitors and buyers, reached over 2,100, up 9 percent compared to 2014.

“Hong Kong remains not only an ideal partner for businesses that seek a potential market, but also a transitional channel for Vietnamese exporters,” the director added.
