Officials from Japan and Vietnam stressed the importance of the Trans-Pacific Partnership last week and urged the other 10 TPP countries to approve the trade deal. Negotiations were initiated in late 2008 and concluded last October on the agreement, which is a regional deal that includes the United States, Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam.
Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe urged his parliament to take up the trade deal. Vietnam, which is pushing a more robust economic relationship with the United States, is also ready to pass the agreement.
Both leaders were in Washington, D.C., last week to attend an event hosted by the US-Asean Business Council.
The National Pork Producers Council, which strongly supports the TPP, is urging congressional lawmakers to bring up and approve the agreement this year. The organisation is holding its biannual legislative fly-in this week and will have about 140 pork producers in the nation’s capital to lobby Congress on the TPP.
