
Deputy minister of industry and trade, Tran Quoc Khanh, that he expects TPP talks to resume in September. He made the remarks after returning from a visit to Washington, where he discussed outstanding bilateral issues with USTR officials.
A key Vietnam interest is to obtain favorable rules and market access to help its growing apparel and textile industry. Washington and Hanoi are also working on a on a plan to ensure that Vietnam can comply with the TPP’s labor chapter.
Khanh said issues involving autos, dairy, and IP remained to be solved. After they are settled in bilateral talks, they would be discussed in the multilateral meeting.
Garment-textile was also among matters that hindered the negotiators from reaching a final agreement as it is a both bilateral and multilateral issue that relates to many countries, he said. Once a multilateral consensus is reached, negotiations on it are considered to be concluded, he noted.
