Vietnam to issue one-year visas for Americans

Law2

Vietnam will issue one-year multiple-entry visas for US citizens, instead of three-month visas, following the National Assembly’s approval on April 4.

The legislature gave the nod to the new visa rule applicable to American passport holders after State President Tran Dai Quang asked the NA for approval of a diplomatic note on visa issuance between Vietnam and the US

According to the new State President, the US had requested the validity of Vietnam visa for the Americans to be lengthened to one year and have multiple entries to travel here for business, tourism, personal matters and other short-term stays. Since the 2014 law on entry, exit, transit and residence of foreigners in Vietnam was passed by the NA, US citizens have been able to get three-month visas with no extension of stay.

Deputy Hoang Thanh Tung from Soc Trang Province said the approval of the diplomatic note would facilitate Vietnamese citizens’ travels to the US, help visa applicants save time and cost, and promote Vietnam-US relations.

Concluding discussions on the proposal, NA vice Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong said the NA agreed on issuance of one-year multiple-entry visas for US citizens.

The visa proposal presented to the NA is in compliance with the Constitution and the law on signing, joining and implementing international treaties, Phong added.

The NA is expected to pass a resolution approving the diplomatic note on Vietnam-US visa issuance on April 9.

Around 164,740 Americans visited Vietnam in the first three months of this year, up 14.3 percent year-on-year, according to the general Statistical Office. The number in 2015 was 491,250, rising by 10.7 percent.
