It is stated by Deputy Minister Tran Quoc Khanh at the press conference with the media on the sidelines of Announcement Ceremony on Vietnam Import and Export Report 2017 held in Ho Chi Minh City on 22nd March 2018.
Regarding the “drastic measures” that the US Government has applied to steel and aluminum imported into the US market, Mr. Tran Quoc Khanh said that these steps are contrary to the view of the US in the past 70 years and relatively sudden with global trading system and trading partners in the world including Vietnam.
With the trend of trade liberalization maintained over the past few decades, the measures taken by the administration of President Donald Trump can be considered as the rise of protectionism and isolationism in one of the largest trading partners around the world.
This causes great concern not only for Vietnam but also for the rest of the world. The response of each country is different, but in general, all countries desire to maintain dialogue with the US Government because they do not want to trigger a trade war which breaks the multilateral trading system established and maintained over the past few decades.
Facing the excessive protective measures in the US market, Mr. Khanh said that “we need to be calm to recognize the problem and should not to respond immediately to complicate the situation. The Government will accompany with enterprises to take appropriate measures.
First of all, giving priority to dialogue with the US Government. Specifically, in the coming time the Government will hold consultations with the US Government on issues related to Vietnamese enterprises, especially steel and fishery products.
Also, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has advised enterprises to be calm and support the Government in the dialogue with the US Government. The Ministry will continue to dialogue and work with enterprises to develop more comprehensive plans to cope with any problem arising in international trade.
