Thailand hopes to sign visa exemption agreement with Myanmar

Bangkok, October 23 (VNA) – Thailand’s cabinet on October 22 approved a draft proposed by the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to lift visa restrictions on Myanmar citizens making short-term visits to the country by air.

Under the draft, people from Myanmar can enter Thailand without a visa via 23 designated airports, including Suvarnabhumi, Chiang Mai and Phuket. However, their stay must not exceed 14 days.

The plan will not be applied for visitors passing through land border gates.

According to Thai Government spokesman Teerat Ratanasevi, the draft agreement would be signed when Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra visits Myanmar in December. Currently, Thai visitors to Myanmar must apply for entry visa which will allow them to stay there within 28 days.
