Vietnam records US$24.1 billion in trade surplus with US

Vietnam’s merchandise trade surplus with the United States reached US$24.1 billion in the first nine months of 2017, according to the latest statistics released by the government.

In September, Vietnam exported US$3.62 billion worth of goods to the US, raising the country’s total exports to the world’s largest economy in the January-September period to nearly US$31 billion, up 9.4% from a year earlier.

Garment exports were the biggest earner bringing in US$9.25 billion in the first nine months of the year, equivalent to almost 30% of Vietnam’s total export revenues to the US during the period.

Footwear came second with revenues totalling US$3.76 billion, up 13.7% annually, followed by phones and phone parts, which brought in US$2.89 billion.

Timber and timber products raked in US$2.36 billion, while computers and electronic products made US$2.41 billion.

Three other exports each brought in more than US$1 billion, namely machinery, seafood and leather products.
