Jakarta , July 4 (VNA) – Senior officials from labour and employment ministries of the ASEAN+3 countries are gathering in Bali island, Indonesia , for the third ASEAN Labour Inspection Conference to discuss ways to develop and explore partnerships enhancing workplace compliance through labour inspection.
At the opening of the two-day event on July 4, Indonesian Minister of Manpower and Transmigration Muhaimin Iskandar said that member states shared the view that good structural and operational models for effective and credible labour inspection in every workplace in all sectors of industries were required.
He stated that ASEAN needs to develop guidelines on labour inspection in line with the situation of each country, and expressed his hope that ASEAN+3 will share good practices and experiences in building labour inspector capacity, strengthening collaboration, and exploring areas for technical cooperation.
According to the Indonesian minister, in the second ASEAN Labour Inspection Conference in Vietnam ’s southern province of Dong Nai , member countries agreed on the Dong Nai Action Plan, consisting of actions to implement the Ha Long recommendations on Labour Inspection Cooperation for 2012-2015, which were consented in the first conference in 2010.
Developing the guidelines is part of the recommendations stating that member states will promote regional cooperative partnership by strengthening the network of labour inspectorates, he said.
In addition to developing guidelines and models for labour inspection, participants will review information on the number of labour inspectors to size of workforce, based on each country’s circumstances, in order to ensure sufficient resources are available.
They will also identify the practical gender barriers to entering inspectorates, where the number of women or men are low or out of balance.
ASEAN+3 includes 10 ASEAN members, namely Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, Brunei, the Philippine, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, and Vietnam, along with three East Asian countries, namely China, the Republic of Korea, and Japan.
