Indonesia, China expand marine safety cooperation

Jakarta , July 15 (VNA) – Indonesia and China will broaden cooperation in maritime safety through conducting a joint exercise on search and rescue at sea slated for July 18.

Speaking at a July 14 ceremony to welcome China's patrol ship named Haixun 01, which docked at Tanjung Priok port in Jakarta, Director-General for the Sea Transportation under Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation Bobby Mamahit said his country will expand maritime safety cooperation with China like it did with other counties such as Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, and Japan.

The aforesaid cooperation will be marked by a joint exercise by the two most populous countries in eastern coasts of Asia, he noted, adding that Haixun 01 will take part in the event.

The two sides will exchange knowledge and experience in maritime safety through the joint exercise, he said.

China boasts knowledge and technology in navigation and maritime safety, ship shipbuilding, and experience in search and rescue at sea, and the expansion of maritime safety cooperation with China will benefit both sides, he stressed.

According to Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Liu Jianchao, China contributed 1 billion RMB to expanding cooperation with Indonesia in maritime transport and related activities.

He added that his country also contributed 3 billion RMB to expansion of China-ASEAN maritime cooperation, which includes navigation safety, and search and rescue.

Bobby said cooperation between China and ASEAN in the maritime sector was discussed at an ASEAN-China meeting in November 2012 in Phnom Penh , Cambodia with stress on strengthening cooperation in all related fields.
